The Delaware Township Library Book Club
Will meet Sunday, April 14 @ 3:00 pm
To discuss the book:

Behind the Beautiful Forevers

by: Katherine Boo

Winner of the BookBrowse 2012 Best Nonfiction Book Award

About this book:
In this brilliantly written, fast-paced book, based on three years of uncompromising reporting, a bewildering age of global change and inequality is made human.

Annawadi is a makeshift settlement in the shadow of luxury hotels near the Mumbai airport, and as India starts to prosper, Annawadians are electric with hope. Abdul, a reflective and enterprising Muslim teenager, sees “a fortune beyond counting” in the recyclable garbage that richer people throw away. Asha, a woman of formidable wit and deep scars from a childhood in rural poverty, has identified an alternate route to the middle class: political corruption. With a little luck, her sensitive, beautiful daughter – Annawadi’s “most-everything girl” – will soon become its first female college graduate. And even the poorest Annawadians, like Kalu, a fifteen-year-old scrap-metal thief, believe themselves inching closer to the good lives and good times they call “the full enjoy.”

But then Abdul the garbage sorter is falsely accused in a shocking tragedy; terror and a global recession rock the city; and suppressed tensions over religion, caste, sex, power and economic envy turn brutal. As the tenderest individual hopes intersect with the greatest global truths, the true contours of a competitive age are revealed. And so, too, are the imaginations and courage of the people of Annawadi.

With intelligence, humor, and deep insight into what connects human beings to one another in an era of tumultuous change, Behind the Beautiful Forevers carries the reader headlong into one of the twenty-first century’s hidden worlds, and into the lives of people impossible to forget.

Thanks to the sponsorship of DK Books, lots of planning, and many wonderful volunteers, we were able to have a very fun and extremely successful Star Wars Reads Day at our library, which we turned into a festival! Our event was attended by a large number of our entire community, and was eagerly awaited by the children (and the grown up Star Wars fans) of our town for weeks.

The library sponsored T-Shirts for the event (worn by our costumed character photo op photographer, Ivy), with a special logo designed by The Happy Shirt company, in Lawrence, KS. There are still T-Shirts available, for those interested!

One of the fantastic features of the day, was our own “Star Wars Cantina”, or a bounce house! This was a popular attraction for the day, and warmed our participants up with exercise on a chilly day.

Speaking of chilly, the kids were loving the sno-cones, made here by Library Trustee and volunteer Jody Lockhart.

Giveaways sent by DK, including bookmarks, tattoos, pins, stickers, and more…were part of the magic of the day. Also held at the end of the event, was a raffle that included books and posters(also sponsored by DK), a bobblehead, t-shirts, and other Star Wars goodies.

Darth Vader, Jango Fett, and Princess Leia all made appearances, and took photos with program participants (including the library director).

And of course, what would a read day celebration be without lots of reading??? Including a story time that was attended by 98% of attendees (that over a hundred kids and their parents that attended story time!)

Crafts were also a big hit, and our volunteers were swamped with participants, ready to make a yoda finger puppet.

While we will continue to deliver to these residents, as well as to those living in Sunset Haven, we would also like to begin delivering to individual homes. If you or a family member/friend would love to have a delivery of a few books (as well as pick up of library books that have already been read) each week, contact the library for information, and to sign up.

This outreach includes elderly shut-ins, patrons that may be unable to get out due to surgery, illness, or inclement weather, or mothers of new babies. If you feel you or someone else has need of this service, but doesn’t fall into the above category, please contact us to make arrangements.

Hello, I am Amy Lassiter, and in case you don’t know me, I will be the new director of the Delaware Township Library. Yes, I am in fact, the daughter-in-law of Kay Lassiter. While I am over the moon excited to be taking over the job in Valley Falls (I am currently the director of the Winchester Public Library, just a few miles away), it is also very bittersweet for me. I know that the community has felt an immense loss over the last few months, and really, I think that more than anyone, I can relate to your sorrow. I hope together, we can mourn Kay’s passing, and move along a new and vibrant path for the library. Please stop in at any time and reminisce; it will feel wonderful to me, as well as to you, to heal in this way.

In happier news, I am so excited to begin some new programs, and to move the library forward! I even have an event planned in October, that I promise will be an absolute blast for the whole community. I will begin my work full time in Valley Falls on August the 13th, and hope to meet all of you that I haven’t yet become acquainted with, at that time.

For now, “Like” the Delaware Township Library on Facebook, and follow our tweets on twitter (the link is in our sidebar to the left!) I look forward to our many happy reads in the coming months!

Sunday, May 13th we were privileged to present two scholarships to graduating seniors. Miss Kayla Reyle was presented the 14th Lois E. Wilson scholarship and Mr. Will Jones received the 8th annual Miss Viola Reichart scholarship.

Mrs. Lois E. Wilson was the Delaware Township Librarian for sixteen years retiring in Oct. of 1981. She and her husband had one daughter born to the marriage and Miss Wilson still lives here in town after retiring from TWA. Mrs. Wilson had a sister who taught in our school district at one time as well, Mrs. Walter Cole. Lois enjoyed the young people that came into the library and we hope that she would have felt honored to know that we were helping the young people of the community to further their education even in a small way.

Miss Viola Reichart was a beloved teacher here in our district. She served on our library board for many years and when she passed away we approached her family about a scholarship in her name and they were more then happy to help us with that project. We couldn’t think of a better way to honor her then to have a scholarship in her name.

If any of you would like to donate money to our scholarship fund so we can continue this for as long as possible we would appreciate the donation.

Because of our nice winter the kids here in town will be getting out a bit early. That’s nice is some ways as they usually don’t have an entire three months away from school. This year they will be close.

I remember the summers of my youth. I loved school but I loved my summer as well. We didn’t have all the organized things that kids do now. Ours was a lazier time of the year. We rode bikes, played games with neighborhood kids, went to the parka and went swimming. Only boys had the opportunity to play summer ball. No such luck about having things like that for girls. That was way it was before Title Nine came along. I loved to play ball and because we had lots of boys in the neighborhood I had plenty of chances to do that.

I had a neighbor friend that I did lots of great stuff with too. We sat on her porch and played jacks or read comics or we went bike riding together or played games over next door to her there on Lincoln street.

I have discovered that children don’t know those old games anymore and think how sad it is that they don’t play games like that with each other. We try to play some of them here during the summer reading program and introduce kids to the games that were fun for all of us before television came about or video games etc.

We also had Saturday matinees at the Coed Theater. They were usually double features with a news reel and a cartoon. Popcorn was ten cents and pop maybe about the same. You dropped your money in this machine and a cup dropped down into place and you selected the pop you wanted. We got to go most of the Saturdays if we got our chores done. It was a great time of life.
