We have the end of winter in sight hopefully. I don’t know when our yard will dry up outside and I noticed some damage to our landscaping this morning. I feel sorry for our local farmers. It is spring break now in our community and we are busy with kids. That is good. I have been working on the summer reading things as well so it will make summer arrive all too quickly. It is always here before I know it anyway and that is our very busy time of the year. We have added a new laptop to the mix here so now we have nine public use computers here at the library. We don’t have room for many more. Maybe one more desk top for the extra room. That will be summer before that happens.
Since adding the last libraries to the KOHA internet we now have 628,000 items available for our patrons. I just think that is amazing. When I began as the librarian here in October 1, 1981 our library consisted of around 7000 items. Through interlibrary loan we might be able to obtain something we didn’t have on hand but it involved filling out a form and sending that form to another library through the mail system and then hoping they received it and would send the request back to you. What a hassle in many ways. Now we get on line and post the hold on something and most of the time the article is here within a few days. Kansas libraries just keep getting better and better.
Today I set up a blog at kaylassiter@wordpress.com. You can follow along with this not only as I learn to do things but to see what is new here at the library and with me in general.
It is the time of the year where we think about New Year’s Resolutions. What are you resolving to do this next year? Hopefully you are making a list of things that you want or need to read this coming year. Several years ago at a summer reading program workshop that we attended in February of that year, the guest speaker suggested we keep a list of the titles we read through the year. Well, many years later, I’m still doing that. This year I’m making a list of things I want to read and see how many I actually get read. There are so many great books out there to read and so little time as the saying goes.
We were thrilled to be selected as one of the Kansas Library taking part in a pilot program for loaning books to other states and being able to receive them as well. The other states taking part in this pilot program are: Connecticut, New Jersey, Wisconsin and parts of Canada. If this program works well it will certainly open many doors to our patrons for material that has otherwise been out of reach for us. This will be extremely helpful for people doing research on various subjects.
